On OpenAI's own COBOL migration test, GPT-6.1 Sol translated old programs into languages like Java, Python and Rust with 86.6% accuracy at low effort, up from 5.4% for GPT-5.6 Sol, and hit 97.9% at higher effort. IBM estimates COBOL still handles 95% of ATM transactions. OpenAI says experts should still review any migration before it goes live.
